Trash Talk. A Serious Issue.

In the past few years I’ve heard more and more trash talk than ever before – garbage that is. Whether it be e-waste (electronic waste) improperly dismantled in third world countries, giant garbage islands twice the size of Texas or the stench of landfills masked by “deodorant cannons” - there’s no denying there’s a serious problem with waste.

Let’s examine a few trash stories worth familiarizing yourself with.
Gallons of 'Deodorant' – That’s right the Beijing landfills are getting so putrid with odor they are going to begin pumping gallons of ‘deodorant’ into the air due to the complaints of nearby communities. The air freshener 'cannons' can send scents as far out as 164 feet. Chemicals masking chemicals for a temporary solution= wonderful. Check out the full article from popsci.com.

Giant trash island – Somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii there is some serious trash in the ocean – literally. . The enormous heap of trash TWICE the size of Texas is better known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It floats on retaining an estimated 3.5 million tons in its current - most of which is plastic. Watch this video.

E-waste – According to the US Environmental Protection Agency, more than 4.6 million tons of e-waste (electronic waste) are dumped in US landfills EACH YEAR. (The US only has 19 states with regulatory ewaste disposal laws – in essence that’s only 20% of tech trash being disposed properly.) The problem? Technology is full of toxic chemicals that if not properly disposed can be released into the community atmosphere and water over time. Just imagine what a few hundred lazy people not willing to recycle a laptop can do to a community. Talk about karma.
E-waste to third world countries – Talk about dumping your problems on someone else...E-waste is routinely exported by developed countries to developing ones, where laws to protect workers and the environment are inadequate or not enforced. Over time, toxic chemicals from this e-waste can leach into the land or disperse into the atmosphere, impacting the environment. The countries that get the worst of it include India, Africa and China. Only Dell and HP have global corporate policies that state they will not export to developing countries – what will it take for others to step up?

Concealing Wires - New Option

I spend a good portion of time teaching people ways to hide and conceal wires. Today, I've learned a new option...embracing them.

Wire Blooms Cable Clips - only ten bucks from perpetualkid and Cable Monkey eight bucks from Urban Outfitters.

TV Poltergeist

Mind you we are in the home stretch of March Madness - A critical time for sports fans. And at a place like the gym you think every TV would have on CBS full-time. Not at my gym - all they insist on looping is SOAPnet.

I would seriously rather have the TV off than watch Days of Our Lives. And, with that said meet the newest gadget - TV Poltergeist. For $12.99 at thinkgeek you can hide the mini remote anywhere and turn off any TV stealth mode. However, the concept is not revolutionary - these things have been out for years. A classic one is TV-B-Gone.

And on a side note I've never really seen anyone capitalize on this.

Hearts and Threes for Piano Improv.

Best viral I've seen in a long time. Get ready to geek out.

Bird with Baguette - ultimate world villain.

We all remember the bird that 'dropped a baguette' into the multi-billion-dollar Hadron Collider causing it to shut down. Well, it strikes again! Okay, not really. But this is another fun example of a classic Google StreetView pic.

And it is certainly not an anomaly. From crimes caught on tape to naked sunbathers to the Google Street Car sadly killing a deer - Google StreetView has captured it all.
Check StreetViewFun.com for daily findings.

360 Degrees of Glory.

Sony PM5K – better known as Bloggie.

If you’ve ever been to Epcot and visited the countries of Canada and China - you know they have pretty sweet 360 videos of the lands played on loop. How cool would it be to have the tools to create your own? Well, Sony has made it possible with ease.

As a huge fan of pocket camcorders (I've bought more of these as gifts than any other tech product - beating out my router house warming gift ten fold). I continue to rave about them as a personal must. And since they’ve been out for a few years the assortment has grown, the prices have dropped and the advancements have increased.

Now, the Sony HD Bloggie becomes one to look at. Not only can it take 5MP stills it's the first equipped with a fisheye lens accessory that can rotate 270 degrees – allowing you to capture 360 degrees of footage with the included software. For under $200 bucks (and prices on these camcorders always drop) its exciting that we keep seeing upgrades in these compact devices.

Ringtone Clears Sinuses - A Revisit.

Let's take a trip down memory lane (better known as a few days ago). I'm still sitting perplexed on a post that the company Japan Ringing Tone Library announced, regarding the creation of a ringtone that can clear your sinuses.

Now, as someone who reads through tons of wacky gadgets and geeky interesting stuff daily, this one has me really confused.

As a geriatric in my twenties I have spent one too many zeroes on sinus surgeries and not had a sense of smell for the better part of ten years- and let me tell you these procedures aren’t fun. And now, you’re going to tell me the "Hana Sukkiri Melody" ringtone (with its 27 variations of frequency used to shake the pollen out of your nose) is the answer to my problems? Erroneous. Simply Erroneous!

My Blackberry is not holding a solution of this magnitude - I'm sure of it. And P.S. - I'm not going to look like the weirdo taking massive inhales of my phone every time it rings - I’ll stick with my WWE ringtone as if that’s normal.

Topeka, Kansas now Google, Kansas

Back in '98 Topeka declared an official 'Topikachu' day to kick off Pokemon's invasion into the US. Today, it kicks it up a notch by renaming the entire city; 'Google'.

The stint from Topeka's mayor Bill Bunten is a PR push to snag a spot in Google's new "Fiber for Communities" program where they will be installing new Internet connections into several communities with much higher data speeds (up to 100x).

Bunten feels strongly about the addition of the Internet connections in helping boost the area attraction for both businesses and young adults.

The US is way behind in internet speeds compared to other locations around the globe - Google hopes this will be a step in the right direction.

The name change is only temporary though they are considering a permanent change to Ocho Cinco.

LeBlanket with Sleeves.

When I was little I use to get really excited for themed nights at sporting events (where you get some crappy item for free). Well, the Cavs have taken a different approach to the concept. Mark your calendars for Friday, March 5th where it will be Snuggie Night at Q Arena. Thats right - in an effort to break a Guinness World Record, KeyBank has teamed up with the Cavs to set the record of "largest gathering of people wearing fleece blankets."

I heard a rumor that if successful could be followed by ShamWow Night and Magic Bullet Night respectively.

Hydro - wha??

Just when you thought it was revolutionary to have motorized art conceal that big flat screen - meet Hydrofloors. Submerging and movable floors create pools that were 'so not there a few minutes ago'.
