Dropping the (Times Square) Ball - CNN

Every year someone literally gets to push the button that drops the Times Square Ball that rings in 2012. Individuals in the past have been Colin Powell, Mohammed Ali, and Bill and Hillary Clinton. But, this year it’s a different choice – according to the New York Post it’s…Lady Gaga.  She will join Mayor Bloomberg to kick off 2012. But, on a separate note, as you watch the ball drop, you might want to note the technology going on behind the scenes and literally on it.

Here are some deets as discussed on CNN today   and video below.

THE DEETS.
The ball drop has occurred over the last 104 years and it wasn’t always so hi-tech.

The first ball was made of iron and wood, weighed 700 pounds, and was covered with 100 light bulbs. Those numbers now, are kind of pathetic!

Let me give you the specs on this year’s ball as an estimated 1 billion people look on:

· The ball features 32,256 Philips LEDS; 8,064 in each of four colors (red, blue, green, white)
· Ball can be digitally controlled showcasing 16 million colors and billions of patterns
· The 2012 ball is made of aluminum - 12 feet in diameter and weighs 11,875 lbs
· 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles create the iconic shape of the Ball
· Each year, the Waterford Crystal triangles that adorn the Ball are updated to a new theme. This year’s it’s theme is “Let There Be Friendship.”

All About LED.
In 2007, they completely converted the bulbs over from halogen to LED. I spoke with Silvie Cassanova, a spokesperson for Phillips and she noted that just by switching over, the ball itself has become 88% more energy efficient. Each LED bulb lasts 30x more than the halogen bulbs. The ball itself burns only as much energy per hour as two home ovens. Understand with those numbers noted, these are the same LEDs that you can purchase in the store, and I think that’s a big consumer takeaway. The Times Square Ball is awesome (and great for making out under when it drops)… it’s a heads up example for the consumer; you can spend $50 on a light bulb and replace it in 6 months or you can spend $15 on an LED bulb that will last20-25 years and will save you $142 in energy cost. AND just like the ball, you can save 88% energy consumption.

Ball and Special Effects
The ball is a permanent fixture in Times Square so it’s utilized beyond New Years Eve. It’s often used for tours and other events like Valentines Day and Earth Day. And, since it can be digitally controlled, it can portray billions of patterns and also video. On Valentines Day they put a heart video on it and on Earth Day an Earth is showcased.

Who knew?!
Six electricians handle the actual ball drop (they wind the cable that raises and lowers the ball) - since its run on hydraulic, there is a certain amount of electricity used to make it happen.

Candlelighters - Meet Eli

As we all have been blessed with the good health and the comforts of home for the holidays please take three minutes out to watch this video on my friend Eli.
I’ve had the amazing opportunity over the last year to work with Candlelighters NYC.  We are a very small organization that supplies resources to kids with cancer being treated in New York.  We are also a resource to help their parents, too.  Most of the kids are treated at NYC’s Sloan Kettering Hospital and the families stay at the Ronald McDonald House.

In short, these families come from all over and it’s not just for a visit or two.  Many of the families have been coming in for years.  Some live for weeks, or in the case of Eli months, at the hospital or at the Ronald House.  They often are living from lab test to lab test and have to schedule last minute flights into NYC.  The cost of flights, NYC food, parking, etc., has been daunting to be exposed to.

On a positive note - I have been fascinated by how technology has helped with visits.  iPod Touches, 3DS, Crayola Color Explosion Kits, Wiis, have been huge especially for the little boys sitting in a bed all day.  (Doctors sometimes walked in amaze and I am dumbfounded by the turnaround -- its like, they are kids it's not rocket science!)  It definitely appears the tech briefly takes their mind off medical problems, and also in some instances (iPod touch, iPad), have given them ways to communicate with other family members that cannot be there.

Walking into a hospital room and seeing a child hooked up to wires (and enduring some painful procedures) and having a doctor come in every 20 minutes – I don’t know how these kids and parents do it.  I wish everyone could be exposed to what these families are going through; sacrificing financially and emotionally to do everything in their l power to help their child get well.

My big hope for 2012 is to find sponsors for Candlelighters.  There are very few resources that are able to be supplied and often times we take it upon ourselves especially when it comes to getting toys and gifts for the kids.

If you know of any company that can help with a write off – please let me know or pass along this article.

Top Apps

Top apps for iOS. A must-have guide.

With over 500,000 apps on the iOS side alone - it’s no easy task staying on top of them! And if you just scored an iPhone or iPad for Christmas you may feel overwhelmed.

I am constantly asked, “What are the best apps?” I think a better question would be, “What are the apps you use more than once?”  Here are my top picks and the ones that are consistently in my arsenal:

(A number of these picks have been my faves showcased throughout the year on CBS, CNN, Parents.com and Fitness mag)

Games
Marble Mixer, $0.99 - $1.99 (iPad)
One minute on the clock - see how many marbles you can get in the hole as the board rotates.  Each corner of the iPad can be a different player and marbles are denoted by color.  It's like Hungry Hippos and it gets more fun as time starts to expire and the board spins faster.

Wurdle, $1.99
Two minute word search with multi-player capability.  My sister and I have been known to play this for about 40 games straight.  It's got a Boggle vibe and is made for competitive people.

Escape Rosecliff Island (for iPad), $1.99
My whole family spent the entire Fourth of July beating this game on 4 iPads.  It’s the ultimate picture search with 25 different boards on a haunted island – it's not easy and the accompanying eerie music is sweet!  Only one downside – weak ending to the game, which was a bit of a downer, but I won't spoil that for you.  And PS – it's from PopCap, the makers of Bejeweled, so you know it will be both good and addicting.

Bejeweled 2, Free - $0.99 (On sale)
The obvious classic.  If you haven’t played this yet - must download.

Productivity
Mint, Free
The ultimate app and website for tracking your expenses.  Sometimes you don't realize where you are spending until it is visually mapped out for you in a pie chart.  Effective for budgeting and notably also uses bank level encryption.

Glympse, Free
Send anyone a link on their phone, Facebook or Twitter for X amount of time showing your location.  Great for business meetings or just meeting up with friends, allowing them to see where you are.

ZocDoc, Free
One of my faves of the year.  ZocDoc is a free app and website that allows you to search and book available doctors appointments within your area (using your smartphones GPS).  Most appointments are booked within 24-48 hours (clearly beating the average 3 week wait time) and you can search by specialist, insurance provider, and sort by reviews.

Find My Friends, Free
Apple's version of seeing where friends and family are at all times.  Each must have an iPhone and enable the feature.  I like this for parents who want to track their kids.

AroundMe, Free
I love Siri, but I still use this app.  Find out where ATMs, restaurants, bars, etc., are located around you.  You can also manually search – I often use this when I am traveling to find places like “UPS Store” or “FedEx”.

Misc
Houzz, Free
Need interior design ideas? Look no further.  Houzz has over 200k photos broken down by room and submitted by professionals.  Awesome because you don’t have to spend $5 on a magazine and only get a few clippings.  There are over 20k pics on bathrooms alone … and you can create your own digital clip book and share ideas with friends.
FunnyCall, Free or Deluxe version $0.99
I really like to mess with my friends with this app.  Before you place a call, you can change your voice to Chipmunk,  Auto-tune, Looping, Cyborg, etc.-- and only they hear it on their end.  I personally love the Echo option -- it really irritates people and you get to play dumb.

Photography
8mm, $1.99
The must have for taking video.  Capture videos that look like they are from 1920, 1970, etc.  Instantly make any clip look like the Wonder Years.

Camera+, $0.99
The must have camera app.  I use this about once a day.  Easily apply filters like Black & White, Vibrant, Sunkiss’d, Hipster, 70’s etc.  You can also add borders, jack up the clarity and of course share or save to camera roll.

Diptic, $0.99
A great way to create a photo collage (number of collage options) to save to your camera roll or share.

Strip Design, $2.99
Cool way to create your own comic book like photos.  Fun backgrounds and effects to choose from.
Ghost Capture, Free or $0.99
I’ve been using this for over a year now and it still geeks me out... simply add ghosts to any photo.  You can change the transparency and make it look pretty realistic - must try.
Postage
Not sure why I like this app, but I seem to use it pretty consistently.  Create postcards with your phone’s photos from holiday to beach effect and share via Facebook, email or text.

MobileMonet, Free or $0.99
Create monet pictures that look like they came from a vendor at Disney World.

Shopping
Barcode Scanning (TheFind, RedLaser, ShopSavvy, Amazon Price Check), Free
I'll be honest, I personally don’t use barcode scanning apps a ton, but they are increasing in popularity and I find the idea rather interesting.  In short, if you want to do comparison shopping in a store, you can simply scan the UPC of the product.  It will pop up stores within the area and the pricepoints of the product to ensure you are getting the best deal.  I recommend using TheFind.
Kids
*Kid Tested!

Talking Tom,  Talking Hippo, Talking Larry, iKitty, Talking Ladybug, Free
All of these are great options for kids and if you haven’t heard of them you are probably living under a rock.  Anything you say is repeated by the cartoon character and you can save and share your own animation.

Crazy Piano, $0.99
This is a silly one that has different characters making piano sounds.
I Hear Ewe, Free
Not sure why my niece loves this one, but she loves to point out the animals and hear the noises – additionally, rather educational.

Berenstain Bears Learn to Share – $3.99
My niece also loves this one – she flips through the pages over and over again.

Beauty and the Beast Storybook Deluxe App, $6.99
An expensive but awesome app.  Includes the read-aloud story with bites of animation, song and also simple matching games and mazes.  Great for kids ages 3+.

Baby Scratch, Free
Turn your baby in to a hipster! Let your toddler play DJ on the interactive turntable.

Baby Piano, Free or $1.99
Fairly straightforward – Baby Piano is a virtual keyboard.  Each key is associated with a different animal that reacts when a key is pressed.

Opportunistic or Low? Cities Cash in on PR Stunts.

Painting the town red is so passé.  With a little cash you can paint an entire town Smurf Blue!
Juzcar, a small town in Southern Spain, agreed to be painted entirely blue for promotion of the Smurfs movie.  Per an agreement with Sony, the little town of only 221 people unanimously agreed to a temporary paint job. (Sony would paint the town back to its notorious white after a short period of time.)  According to Gizmodo via Kuriositas, when Sony returned, the villagers decided to keep it blue noting that some 80,000 people visited the town in a sixth month span. As you can imagine, these visitors generated some serious tourism dollars.  Furthermore, the town decided to keep it blue on a vote that favored the blue- 141 to 33.  Villagers even showed up at the town vote dressed as their favorite Smurf.  (I don’t know about you, but I would have showed up as Azreal and voted against it).

This isn’t the first time a town has taken up the offer of a PR stunt:

Snapdeal.com  -A small village in India changed its name from Nagar to Snapdeal.com (India’s largest coupons site) after the CEO installed 15 hand pumps allowing villagers easier access to water. As reported by CNN, this saved villagers a 2-mile walk but it was an easy $5k PR win for Snapdeal.
ToPikachu, Kansas – Mayor Joan Wagnon renamed Topeka to ToPikachu for a one-day event hosting Pokemon coming to the US in 1998.
Google, Kansas – In an effort to be selected as part of Google's "Fiber for Communities" high-speed broadband program (earning the city Internet speeds of up to 100x), Topeka’s mayor announced an unofficial name change to Google, KS. Sadly, Topeka (and over 1,000 other cities) lost to Kansas City.
Sleepy Hollow, NY – Tarrytown, NY (just outside of Manhattan) voted in 1996 to have their name changed to Sleepy Hollow.  The change was in honor of the legendary story by Washington Irving, who is buried in the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.

Driving Life-sized Mario Kart! CNN

West Coast Customs "re-created two vehicles from Mario Kart 7: the classic Mario Standard Kart, complete with glider attachment for soaring through the air, and the Luigi Bumble V Kart, which resembles a bumblebee and features a rear propeller for underwater navigation." And… I had the amazing opportunity to have an exclusive look behind the scenes for CNN.

The West Coast Customs facility is truly unique, graffiti all over the walls and custom cars of all sorts being decked out all over the place, notably everything super clean and organized. It is definitely a well run operation. Must also note, the crazy projects they had going on (can’t talk about them!) with celebs and companies, were pretty sweet to see in itself.

WCC only had 30 days to complete the two Mario karts as commissioned by Nintendo for the LA Auto Show. It was interesting to learn that this was truly the most unique project they have ever taken on because they had nothing to go off except a cartoon. It was also fun to hear Ryan and the guys talk about the Karts. They lit up with excitement when they explained the process and their passion behind the creation. They played the Mario Kart games over the years and so did their kids. They also noted when the Karts were revealed at the LA Auto Show, they were well received by everyone… not just the young or just the old, which typically happens with a custom make.

Odd question, but I asked Kenny Pfitzer, Floor Manager, West Coast Customs, if they receive a ton of applications to work at WCC? The obvious answer, “ Yes” But naturally, they only take the best of the best!

The Bumble V had three speeds; High, Low and Reverse and can hit speeds up to 30mph. And as you can see I had a blast driving it down the open streets. Although, not gonna lie, I totally pulled an Austin Powers trying to back it out of the garage while everyone looked at me like I was an idiot.

Stay tuned!! 8-)

Grand Central Apple Store - Media Unveil

Today at 10am, select members of the media are invited to a preview of the Apple Grand Central store unveil.

Apple currently has 350+ retail locations in 11 countries and is on the cusp of celebrating its tenth anniversary in retail this May.

But, it’s New York that will see its fifth store (and one of Apple’s largest), when they open the doors of its Grand Central Station location,  Friday at 10am.

According to PC Mag, the store is 23,000 square feet and was once occupied by a restaurant. Apple reportedly signed a ten year lease with the Metropolitan Transit Authority (better known to us New Yorkers as MTA).  But it’s not met without controversy and is allegedly being investigated by New York State Comptroller, Thomas DiNapoli.  PC Mag writes,“Apple's contract, however, doesn't allow for any revenue-sharing with the MTA; New York State is reportedly investigating the deal to determine whether or not the MTA gave Apple "overly generous terms on its lease."

They won’t have any trouble getting customers as Grand Central’s website breaks down the demographics:

· 750,000 people pass through Grand Central daily and over 1,000,000 people during the holidays
· Mean household income for Grand Central Terminal commuters is $95,800; 50% of household incomes are over $100,000, and 20% are over $200,000.

Doors will open at 7am weekdays hoping to catch that morning commuter a few hours before most other stores.  Weekends will see doors open at 10am.

Notable additions to the store:
  • Use of Apple Store app - can make purchases and pick-up in store
  • 15 minute express workshops at this location
  • Can check yourself out without an employee at all locations (update to Apple app)

18.) ONION DECOY BOXES (6), $38, TheOnion.com

Because nothing says I love you like Homeland Security Cologne.

19.) ANGRY BIRDS GIANT PLUSH, $50, ThinkGeek.com
